Over the past several months, artists like Frank Ocean, Chance the Rapper, and Travis Scott all released new hit albums. Chance the Rapper’s new album, Coloring Book
, was released on May 17th
and set the tone for summer. Each album — Ocean’s Blonde
, Chance’s Coloring Book
, and Scott’s Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight
— were a much-anticipated collection and did well immediately following their release.
This excitement extended to the Rutgers Prep community; Tré Allen ’17 liked the song “Mixtape” from Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book
. This was one of the 14 songs on the album, but No Problem, featuring 2 Chainz and Lil’ Wayne,was the most popular reaching over 18 million plays on Soundcloud. Chance, who is 23, came to recognition for his second mixtape, Acid Rap
, in 2013. Acid Rap was nominated for Best Mixtape in 2013 at the BET Hip Hop Awards it but did not win. However, at the 2016 BET Awards, Chance won the Best New Hip Hop Artist award and Coloring Book
won Best Mixtape, confirming his status in popular hip-hop music today.
Additionally, rapper Travis Scott released Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight
with 14 songs on September 2nd. Scott became famous for his 2015 hit, “Antidote”, which reached number sixteen on the Billboard Hot 100. His second album was more much anticipated and had a delayed release on Apple Music. Now available on Spotify, fans are flocking to the app to hear the new number one album.
Frank Ocean released his second studio album, Blonde
, on August 20, 2016. This came after a long wait from his first studio album, Channel Orange
, which was released in 2012 and reached number 2 on the Billboard 200. The album also gave Ocean his first Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2013. Blonde
, the new album reached the number one spot on the Billboard 200 album within a week and received widespread acclaim from music critics. It was also the third-largest debut of the year behind Drake’s Views
and Beyonce’s Lemonade
