As summer came to a close, the tennis community descended upon New York for the United States Open. As the last and most electrifying Grand Slam of the season, the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center was abuzz with 128 veterans and youngsters all vying for America’s most coveted title.
The men’s side was filled with notable absences, with defending champion Stan Wawrinka, two-time champion Novak Djokovic, and 2012 champion Andy Murray all withdrew due to injuries.
Though there was talk of injury rumors surrounding Federer’s back, the five-time US Open champion entered the tournament as favorite to win.
However, Federer encountered trouble early, as he took ve sets to beat his first and second round opponents. His form improved in the third and fourth round, but was not enough to overcome 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro in the quarterfinals.
Coming off a herculean comeback against Dominic Thiem in the fourth round, del Potro spoiled tennis fans’ dreams of a Federer- Nadal seminal.
Prior to his match with del Potro, Nadal also initially struggled to nd his form. Unlike Federer, he was able to improve over the course of the tournament and beat del Potro in 4 sets in the semifinals.
The wide-open bottom half was even more open after the early exit of 2014 champion Marin Cilic and Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov defeat of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Sam Querrey lost in the quarterfinals to South African Kevin Anderson, who would go on to reach the finals.
In the championship match, Nadal defeated Anderson in straight sets and captured his third US Open and six-teenth Grand Slam.
September 7, 2017 kicked o the start of a new fantasy football season as people all over the country gun it out every week to see who will reign supreme in the NFL regular season.
Fantasy Football is a trademark of American culture. In a fantasy football league, every participant creates their own “football team” made up of real professional players.
The performance of the participant’s team hinges on the real performance of the players in his league. Most football leagues are head-to-head leagues in which teams compete against one another every week.
The team’s record determines the participant’s playoff seed. Fantasy Football play- offs take place in weeks 14-17 of the NFL regular season, and, when a team loses, they are eliminated from contending for the champion spot.
Some leagues also award 1 point or half a point for every reception, increasing the value of receivers and running backs who accumulate many receptions.
According to the FSTA, about 41 mil- lion people play fan- tasy sports every year. People of all ages can play Fantasy Football as the average age of a user is 34, while 18% of the market is held by teens.
Many leagues require participants to pay an entry fee that will acts as a prize for whoever wins the league. Even though the federal government does not classify fantasy football as a game of chance and thus not gambling, this has not stopped several states from placing restrictions on certain fantasy football activities like charging an entrance fee.
Currently, at Rutgers Prep, we have our own Fantasy Football club, which is a sign of how popular Fantasy Foot- ball truly is.
Fantasy Football is a great, albeit time-con- suming, activity that sports fans can bond over.
