Academy Awards is sure to be a night full of glamour and talent. The Oscars are set to air February 26th
and will feature actors from some of the year’s highest achieving films. The Oscars will be hosted by comedian, Jimmy Kimmel, who is no stranger to celebrities. As a seasoned award show host, Kimmel will have no problem filling the night with memorable moments and plenty of laughs.
One of the most talked about films this season has been Damien Chazelle’s La La Land
. Co-stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling have both been nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Leading Role. The film is also up for an additional twelve nominations including the categories for Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture.
After taking home multiple awards at the Critics’ Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, many anticipate a successful night for the team behind the film.
Others members of the Best Picture category include Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Lion, Manchester by the Sea, and Moonlight.
Theodore Melfi’s film Hidden Figures
generated a lot of buzz within the film community, sharing the stories of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson, three talented African-American women, who played an integral role in NASA’s mission to surpass the Soviet Union in the space race. Many found this film compelling and empowering, as it shed light on a story in history that has been greatly overlooked.
Known as the tear-jerker of the group, Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea
follows Lee Chandler’s journey home after the death of his brother. During his time of grief, Chandler must also take on a new role as caretaker for his young nephew, making this film a true testimony to the importance of family during a time of loss.
Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge
takes viewers to the battlefield during World War II. Army medic, Desmond Doss, makes it his mission to save his fellow Americans, but he insists on doing so unarmed. Doss brings his pacifist views to the struggles of war, making many rethink what is possible when solving a problem without violence.
Garth Davis’s film, Lion
, takes us around the world following the journey of Saroo, a young boy born in India who is adopted by a loving family in Australia. The film follows Saroo’s growth and delves into his struggle with finding his roots after being separated from his parents at a young age.
This year’s nominees cross a wide variety of cultures, time periods, and conflicts, resulting in one of the most notable years of film to date. The 2017 Academy Awards will recognize a year full of films that brought joy through song and dance, wonder through travels in space, tears through family struggles, and inspiration through some of history’s strongest men and women.
