Since Halloween is just around the corner, here are a few scary movies that have just come out or are in theaters now.
Released in mid-June, The Conjuring 2 is the second installment in the popular Conjuring series. The movie follows two paranormal investigators, Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga), who arrive in London to look into Peggy Hodgson’s (Frances O’Connor) fears of a malevolent being living in her home.
On arrival, Peggy’s daughter begins to show signs of possession. The Warrens try to help but are in turn targeted by the same spirits. If these types of movies intrigue you, make sure to watch it this Halloween season.
If supernatural films are not your style, then The Purge: Election Year might be more up your alley. Containing some major Halloween costume inspiration, TPEY is based on a society where an annual “purge”, a day without any laws, occurs. Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), a victim of a past purge, is running for president and plans to outlaw the yearly event, which makes her a target.
Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), Charlie’s head of security, and Charlie are not safe for long when they end up vulnerable on the streets during the 2016 purge where they must fight to survive. The Purge was a great hit in 2013 so don’t forget to watch the sequel this fall!
Because it was released right before the hustle and bustle of school, you might have missed this new release, Don’t Breathe. With a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 87%, it’s worth the watch for lovers of scares and crime drama.
Rocky (Jane Levy) is a young woman who wants to create a better life for her and her sister. She joins her boyfriend, Money (Daniel Zovatto), and friend Alex (Dylan Minnette) to rob a notoriously wealthy blind man (Stephen Lang). When they discover more information, the three realize that the blind man may be much more dangerous than once thought and that they must escape before becoming victims themselves.
A sequel to the cult classic Blair Witch came out in mid-September, so if you’re in need of a “found-footage” film, be sure to check it out. It follows James, the brother of Heather, a character that went missing in the previous movie, and his friends as they set out to find his sister in the Blair Witch forest.
Another sequel gracing the silver screen on October 28th is Ouija: Origin of Evil. Set in the 1960s, the movie follows a family, headed by a widowed mother (Elizabeth Reaser), who fakes séances to make a living.
Trying up their credibility, they accidentally invite evil spirits into their home, which possess her youngest daughter (Doris Zander). They must fight to send the evil back to where it belongs.
Although the fall is a busy time for college applications and maintaining grades, Halloween binge watching awaits you.
