The 2014 Girls Tennis Team definitely left their mark this year, especially the first doubles team consisting of senior Ashley Avicolli and freshman Irina Johnson.
The dynamic duo not only made it to the finals of the State Championship, but also managed to win for the first time at Rutgers Prep since 2000.
Their victory against Ranney was even sweeter considering they had lost to them by two points the day before after a grueling three set match.
Long, intense matches seemed to be a pattern for the two in their partnership. Avicolli and Johnson’s match was the last match to finish at almost every game between schools all season. This trend continued all the way up to the last match of the season against South Plainfield.
Their matches were often the deciding match for the team. The two finished the season with a winning record, but as captain Avicolli heads off to college, they still seem to be moving in a forward motion.
The rest of the Rutgers Prep tennis team is excited to see what next season brings in hopes of keeping the momentum moving.
