A Glimpse Into Your Future“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It is a question as old as time and one that many students, particularly high schoolers, dread answering. From a young age children are asked what they want to do in life. While a first grader might answer “Fireman,” “Spy,” or “Astronaut,” many students at Rutgers Prep are undecided about the careers they want to pursue. As a result of this, the Upper School will be having a Career Night for students who want to learn more about different career paths and listen to inspiring speakers. Hosted and organized by members of the Rutgers Prep community, the event aims to attract students from a variety of backgrounds to hear from a group of speakers, selected to appeal to the diverse student body. The event is being held in the Dining Commons on Friday, February 24th and is the product of months of hard work from School Council. The Career Night Committee is headed by students, Jamie Chedid ‘17 and Nima Majidi ‘19. Career Night will feature a series of speakers from five professional backgrounds. The speakers will include Assemblyman John Wisniewski, Ms. Christina Harcar, Dr. Uchenna Akosa, Joel Spangler, and Dr. Bahman Kalantari. It will be a closed event for students, faculty, and alumni. The speakers will talk about their respective careers, experiences, and life lessons they have learned and carried with them. Assemblyman John Wisniewski is a Democratic politician who has served in New Jersey General Assembly since 1996, and a prospective candidate for New Jersey Governor. Mr. Wisniewski can offer perspectives as a Rutgers Prep parent, politician, and prospective candidate for New Jersey’s highest office. With such a politically astute student body, Mr. Wisniewski is sure to attract many students. Ms. Christina Harcar is the Director of Editorial and Partner Relations at Audible, Inc., and is also a Grammy Award-winning Executive Producer of Best Spoken Word Album 2012. For any student interested in the arts or music in general, Ms. Harcar can both a look into the dealings of a successful business and, more specifically, from the lense of the music-focused company. The Upper School will also be welcoming Dr. Uchenna Akosa, the Director of Rutgers Health Dental Associates and a dentist at AZ Dental Care, LLC and Mr. Joel Spangler, a Financial Advisor and the Senior Vice President at Merrill Lynch, the wealth management division of Bank of America. Also speaking is Dr. Bahman Kalantari, a professor of Computer Science at Rutgers University, creator of the Polynomiography software, and the author of Polynomial Root-finding and Polynomiography. The event will begin at 6:30 with food being served at the beginning of the night. Additionally, people will be able to roam and interact with the speakers while enjoying dinner. Each speaker will discuss the story of their career path and answer questions for 15 minutes during their presentation. The night will finish off with the keynote speaker, Mr. Wisniewski, who will speak for 25 minutes. The event will end with a series of questions for him and people will once be able to mingle again with the speakers. All in all, it should be an interesting night that will allow member of the Prep community to meet adults with successful careers and even give them a chance to strike an interest in a potential career.
