Take Me Out to the Ball GameOne of the most remarkable things about this year’s World Series were the teams that actually made it. Both team have not won a World Series in a very long time, the Chicago Cubs last win was in 1908 and the Cleveland Indians last win was in 1948. No matter which team came out on top, this World Series was bound to be a monumental one. The first game was monumental in itself. Indians’ pitcher Corey Kluber set a World Series record with eight strikeouts in the first three innings. Roberto Perez hit two home runs to help Cleveland set the tone for the series. The Indians later won the game 6-0 over the Cubs. With the start time of game two pushed up an hour because of a rain threat, Wednesday night was going to be an interesting one. This rain delay affected both starting pitchers with Chicago starter Jake Arrieta struggling with his command, and Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer lasting only three and two-thirds innings. On the offensive side, the Cubs dominated with DH Kyle Schwarber going two for three with a walk and two RBIs in his second game back after a major knee surgery. The Cubs won this game 5-1. However, in game three, the Cubs lost their momentum. Neither starting pitcher lasted more than five innings, and neither of them pitched at speeds faster than 90 miles per hour. The offense for both teams was not doing any better, with the only run being for Cleveland, ending in a slim victory of 1-0. Game four was not what the cubs wanted. Corey Kluber pitched six solid innings for Cleveland on short rest. Jason Kipnis hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning and Carlos Santana also hit a home run for Cleveland. The Indians won the game 7-2 to get a 3-1 series lead over the Cubs. In game five, the Cubs managed to stay alive. Cubs starting pitcher, Jon Lester allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, but the Cubs stayed in the game scoring three runs in the fourth inning. The Cubs won the game 3-2 and knew that they would need to win the next two as well, in order to win the championship. In game six, Cub fans breathed a sigh of relief as they scored seven runs in the first three innings off of Cleveland pitcher Josh Tomlin. The Cubs had three home runs and quite a few extra base hits. They ended the night with a win, beating the Indians 9-3. Game seven brought much excitement from both teams. The lead went back and forth between Cleveland and Chicago and at the end of the ninth inning, the score was tied 6-6. This was only the fourth time that a game seven had gone into extra innings. To add to the pressure, the teams had to wait for a seventeen-minute rain delay before proceeding on with the game. In the top of the tenth inning, the Cubs scored two runs, but the game wasn’t over yet. In the bottom of the inning, Cleveland scored a run, but it wasn’t enough to win the game after Mike Montgomery pitched a grounder to third base. The Chicago Cubs won the World Series for the first time in 108 years, a remarkable feat for both the team and the fans that have stuck with them their entire lives.
