By BIANCA PERGHER ‘16 News Editor & SARAH PARR ‘16 Editor-in-Chief This past Friday, December 11, RPS’s Learning Commons hosted Business Entrepreneurship’s long-awaited Idea Day. The event kicked off with an opening ceremony meet and greet between the groups and parents and supporters. The classic poster board show and tell provided students with the opportunity to attract the audience as well as potential mentors and investors. Subsequently, groups proceeded to pitch their business marketing plans to an audience of around 30 people in one of three locations: the All Divisions Room, the Holliday Room, and the Dining Commons. Participating students were assigned to various alphabetized groups, ensuring successful rounds of presentations of groups such as Suite Case, Aqua Cleanse, NutriGrade, and La Barista. B&E’s program pamphlet efficiently guided guests to the first and second rounds of demonstrations, held from 6:20 to 7:20 pm and 7:30 to 8:30 pm, respectively. Students’ presentations informed visiting parents, teachers, and mentors about their groups’ targeted product consumers, competing companies, and the value associated with the groups’ products and services.
Vaughn Stavropoulos ’16, a student in the AquaCleanse group, said that the most exciting and rewarding part of presenting a new business is “being able to share an idea that might help the world with a problem as pervasive as unclean water.” AquaCleanse is a green ecodrive water desalinization machine designed to make small quantities of ocean water drinkable. For now it’s just an idea, but ultimately, the group would like to see it through to fruition, including creating a prototype, and then hopefully presenting the final product at Demo Day in the spring. Owen Chavez ’17, a student in the StudySpkr group, said that turning an idea into the actual product is not a super interesting process, but one that will pay off in the long run. StudySpkr is an app and website that offers a unique study service by letting students study through electronics’ microphones and speakers. This process will allow different techniques of studying for students. Students can record in essay format, presentation format, or flashcard format, and StudySpkr will put it all together. “Everyone should join [Busi- ness and Entrepreneurship], it’s an awesome program,” Chavez said.Students’ products and services presented at Idea Day surely promise to inspire the RPS community, and will make it proud when the final products are presented at Demo Day.
